Browser types

The two most common Browsers are Internet Explorer and

Mozilla FireFox.

Computers in the classroom have both.

We will use Internet Explorer for most illustrations.

Internet Explorer

Useful for linking to online photo storage

Homepage

Choosing a page that opens automatically when you open your

browser is a good “jumping off” place.

Clicking on TOOLS and INTERNET OPTIONS allows the choice of

a default homepage.

This can be changed according to your “whims”!

Such a page can have a variety of customized settings and links to the “places” you go most often.

“Favorites” links can be added as a TOOLBAR, and also added as a “module” within the page.

Internet searches

Searching is likely the most common pursuit on the Internet.

Search Engines are attached in one way or another to almost every site.

GOOGLE, Micro Soft, and YAHOO are three of the major players.

It seems simplest to choose one search engine, and use it for the majority of tasks.

GOOGLE seems to be the “engine of choice” for most.

This is Micro Soft “Live Search”

It is “built in” to a space in Internet Explorer.

Google has a vast assortment of helpful “aids”.

Clicking more at the top of the page, takes us to a long list of resources.

“The Search”

Choosing the right search terms can simplify the process.

This page has quite a good summary of search aids.

Looking over the features in Advanced Search, and the other topics will give

hints that make a search better than “trial & error”

There is even a page for interpretation of the Search Results Page.

Web Search Help Center

Creating a GOOGLE ACCOUNT is easy, and gives access to a variety

of helpful things.

ORGANIZING INFORMATION

Once search results are found to be useful, one has to choose which you “need”, and would look at a future time.

Hence the “FAVORITES”

Clicking the “+star” gives options for dealing with favorites.

The “plain star” gives the list.

Here again it is judicious to create a system of folders for various topics.

The PHOTOS folder will have links relevant to photos.

ADD TO FAVORITES

This gives the option of “filing” the webpage appropriately.

The ORGANIZE FAVORITES tab lets you rearrange, rename, add folders, and so on.

NEW FOLDER

A new folder to be named just as you would anywhere else.

Name the folder………… HEALTH

A highlighted link can be moved to the appropriate folder.

In this case HEALTH

Opening the “HEALTH” folder shows the newly “filed” item.

The things we do online!

As varied as the people who do them!

BANKING

BUYING

CHATTING

TRAVELLING

……the list goes on.
